MUDS Annual Novice BP IV

Hello fellow Victorians (and a sydneysider who will be in the state),

Once again MUDS would like to invite you all to come and sample the
delights of CBD study and debating by joining us at our annual Novice
BP IV.

When?

Sunday September 3rd from 9am to 5pm followed by drinks at a surprise location!

Where?

The Law School at the University of Melbourne, Pelham St, Parkville

How Much?

$10 for non-MUDS debaters and only $5 for ALL adjudicators

What's included?

Lunch and afternoon tea will be provided for all participants. Please
let us know if you have any special dietary needs.

Who?

We'd love everyone to come along and get involved, especially more
experienced debaters to help out with adjudication but as it is a
novice competition debaters have to sastify the following criteria:
1. Never debated at Worlds
2. Never won a BP competition (internal or intervarsity)
3. Not participated in more than 2 BP competitions (internal or intervarsity)

Why?

Because BP is heaps of fun and this is a great way to learn how to
debate in a BP style and get feedback from some of Victoria's most
experienced debaters. If you're experienced it's because of the warm
and fuzzy feeling you get from helping others.
ALSO the winning team members both receive Readings vouchers!

Registration.

Please register as teams or individual adjudicators with MUDS
Vice-President and External Officer Liz Ames at amesel@gmail.com by
Thursday 31st August.
Payment will be required at Registration on the Sunday morning - no
money, no food. Not even baked goods.....

Another Day at Melbourne

*Another Day At Melbourne (ADAM)*

*So, who's this ADAM fellow?*

*

ADAM is an invitational weekend tournament, to be held just before Australs.
There will be five rounds plus finals of Australs-style debating
(three-on-three with replies), three rocking social events, a public
speaking competition, and a chance to both relax and practice before heading
off to Australs.

*Who wants to debate with ADAM?*
* *

You can register a team with members from any uni or elsewhere, or register
as an individual and we'll put you in a team. It's an excellent opportunity
to have one last practice before Australs, but also a great tournament for
anyone who isn't going to Australs but wants to do something in Australia.

As ADAM is an invitational, it is impossible to enforce AA or n-1. However
ADAM and MUDS strongly encourage contingents to follow AIDA AAA regulations,
and send an appropriate number of adjudicators.

*Details:*

* *

*When: *Friday 23rd – Sunday 25th June
*Where:* University of Melbourne

A more comprehensive schedule is on its way, so stay tuned!

*Cost:*

* *

Registration will be around $70, which includes an opportunity for some
excellent debating, three awesome social events including the Championship
Dinner on Saturday night, lunches on Saturday and Sunday and more. The price
will be confirmed shortly.

*Important Dates:*

* *

Registration will be due 2 June and payment due 9 June at 12 pm. More
details to follow.

*ADAM's friends: *

* *

ADAM is being convened by Laura Bellamy from Melbourne, with the able
assistance of Catherine Mulebach (Tournament Director), Tara Jenkins (Social
Officer) and Chris Hibbard, Dan Clifton, Michelle Kovacevic and Thea
Chesterfield (General Members).

DAV President's Cup

President’s Cup

“Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never
stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and
neither do we” – President George W Bush

We all know that Presidents are eloquent, so now you can be too!

About: The DAV will be holding a tournament to give its adult members a
chance to debate in and adjudicate other-than school level debates. This
tournament is designed to cater to all levels of debating experience.

When: The tournament will be held over the weekend of Saturday 20th and
Sunday 21st of May. It will run from around 9am – 6pm on both days.
There will also be social functions on the Saturday and Sunday night.

Where: The tournament will be held at a centrally located secondary
school easily accessible by public transport. The social functions will
be held in the CBD similarly close to public transport.

Format: Debating will be held in 3 on 3 style. Speeches will be from 6-8
minutes and will follow the style of the schools competition. All rounds
will be secret topics with thirty minutes preparation time. There will
be four preliminary rounds of debating that are all power paired. There
will two finals series an Open Finals Series and a Novice Finals Series.
The Top 8 teams will break to the Open Finals Series which will consist
of Quarter, Semi and Grand Finals. The top 4 novice teams outside of the
top 8 will break to the Novice Finals Series consisting of Semi and
Grand Finals. A novice team is a team where all three speakers are
novices. A novice is anyone who has not debated at an Australian or
World Debating Championship.

appreciated. This tournament provides a unique opportunity to adjudicate
debaters who aren’t still doing their VCE.

adjudicators. This price is inclusive of the debating, morning and
afternoon teas, entrance to both social functions and prizes. This will

DAV Adjudicator Training Session

The DAV will be running an "Adjudicator Training Session" at Deakin Geelong.

Date: March 18
Time: 9am-5pm
Where: I will tell you if you email me to register that you are coming.

The adjudicator training session is an excellent way to not only become qualified to adjudicate external competitions, but also to learn many many things about debating. It runs all day. In the morning you will learn what adjudicators look for in a debate to decide who will win. You will also learn the finer points of the three criteria: matter, manner and method. In the afternoon you will watch two taped debates, and will be required to score them, decide who wins, and give reasons for your decision.

But not only will your knowledge of debating expand exponentially, you will become a qualified adjudicator, able to adjudicate debates for the DAV at $40 a night. Good easy money I say.

If you want to attend, you need to email me now - jrcoo@deakin.edu.au, so that your place is secured.

Don't forget, adjudicators have all the fun!
